numbers 5

Summary

Addresses various laws concerning the purity of the Israelite camp, restitution for wrongs, and the test for an unfaithful wife. These laws are given to maintain the holiness and purity of the community.

Key Points

  • God commands Moses to remove anyone with a defiling disease, discharge, or who is ceremonially unclean from the camp to prevent defiling it (Numbers 5:1-4).

  • Instructions are given for making restitution when someone wrongs another, including confessing the sin and making full restitution plus an additional fifth (Numbers 5:5-10).

  • The law of jealousy is introduced, detailing the procedure for a husband who suspects his wife of unfaithfulness. This includes bringing the wife to the priest, offering a grain offering, and performing a ritual to determine her guilt or innocence (Numbers 5:11-31).

New Covenant Reflections

  • Purity and Holiness: Numbers 5:1-4 emphasises the removal of those who are ceremonially unclean from the camp to maintain purity. In the New Covenant, believers are called to live holy lives, set apart for God, through the cleansing power of Jesus' sacrifice (1 Peter 1:15-16).

  • Restitution and Repentance: Verses 5-10 discuss making restitution for wrongs committed. This reflects the New Covenant principle of repentance and reconciliation (1 John 1:9).

  • Faithfulness and Integrity: The test for an unfaithful wife (Numbers 5:11-31) underscores the importance of faithfulness and integrity in relationships. In the New Covenant, faithfulness is a key aspect of the believer's relationship with God and others, with Jesus exemplifying perfect faithfulness (Revelation 19:11).

It's important to note, God is the one who produces the fruit within us.  The New Covenant is a description of a Believer, not a prescription of what the Believer must do now to please God and man.
