Heart

Greek Word for Heart in Scripture

The Main Greek Word: kardía (καρδία)

Pronounced: kar-DEE-ah
Used: Over 150 times in the New Testament
Root: The same root from which we get cardiac

Core Meanings of kardía

Unlike the modern English idea of “heart” as just emotion, the Greek kardía includes the entire inner world of a person.

Here are its main layers of meaning:

THE CENTRE OF INNER LIFE

kardía = the core of a person
→ the place from which everything flows
(Like Proverbs 4:23 in the LXX says: “Guard your heart, for from it are the issues of life.”)

THE SEAT OF THOUGHTS AND REASONING

Surprisingly, kardía often refers to the mind.

Examples:

“Why do you reason in your hearts?” (Luke 5:22)
“The thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.” (Luke 2:35)

THE SEAT OF EMOTION AND DESIRE

It includes what we normally think of as “heart”:
→ emotions, affections, desires, fears, hopes.

Example:

“Let not your heart be troubled.” (John 14:1)

THE MORAL CENTRE - WILL AND DECISION

kardía includes the will—the place where choices are formed.

Example:

“With the heart man believes…” (Romans 10:10)
Belief isn’t just emotion; it’s a deep inner assent.

THE SPIRITUAL CENTRE - WHERE GOD SPEAKS

This is the part you often discern so deeply.

kardía is the place where:

the Spirit writes truth (2 Cor. 3:3)
Christ dwells by faith (Eph. 3:17)
the eyes are enlightened (Eph. 1:18)

Kardía* (καρδία) refers to:

- the inner person
- mind, thoughts
- emotions and desires
- will and decision-making
- the spiritual center where God works

So when Scripture speaks of the “heart,” it means the whole interior life, not just feelings.
